Star Trek The Next Generation - Jean-Luc Picard Collection
studio: Paramount msrp: $29.99

The Movie:
Paramount already released every single episode of Star Trek The Next Generation on DVD. So why would anyone want to pickup a DVD featuring just a few episodes of the show featuring Captain Piccard? How about the price of the complete seasons? Or maybe these are the only episodes that the fans enjoy?

In any case this collection features what Paramount considers to be Piccards finest moments. Personally I think several are missing that should have been included. In any case the set includes the following episodes:

"The Big Goodbye", "Sarek", "Family", "The Drumhead", "The Inner Light", "Tapestry" and "Darmok"

While each of these feature Piccard in some of his more unusual moments, none, with the exception of Darmok, truly shows his outstanding skills. Piccard becoming Locutus in the Best of Both Worlds, for instance, would have been far more appropriate for a set dedicated to his character.

Still these episodes are worthy of merit in some ways. Darmok, especially, as the pitch harkens back to a more original Star Trek like episode. Piccard fans will find plenty of Piccard here but might be disappointed in the offering. Still the price is alot easier to swallow than the price for the full sets.

The Disc:

Looking pretty much exactly like the TNG sets, this transfer and audio track are pretty sweet for a home theater setup. There's virtually no difference between these and the same episodes that appear on the full season box sets.

Extras are virtually non-existent with the exception of a single documentary about Piccard which is new and fairly interesting. Still the disc offers little else in the way of goodies to entice owners who have these episodes already.

bottom line:
Nothing more than a marketing ploy which should satisfy the casual impulse buyer. Pass on this disc and wait for either a disc of better Piccard episodes or ask Santa for the full seasons.
