Kevin Smith? Who is he? IF you don't know the answer to that question then move on because this disc will only appeal and make sense to those that know who this famous director of movies like Chasing Amy and Dogma truly is.
Shot over several weeks at various colleges across the US, this special of sorts captures Kevin at his best, being himself. Kevin's approach to public speaking is a laid back one, with him dressed in clothes you'd find someone wearing on the street, not at the podium. Like his clothing, his verbose is too laid back, with Kevin letting the audience dictate the pace with his responses.
I admit that most films like this bore me, however Kevin shows a comic side that I never realized he had to offer. Take for instance his cell phone, which becomes a tool for further fodder. He learns of one audience member who claims to have missed work that night to see him, thusby getting fired by refusing to showup. Kevin uses the cell phone to call that person's boss and ask for his job back. It's original and pure genuius.
The topics range from very informative to funny to just off the wall. Smith's background information on Jason Mewes is more than worth the admission. However a story on Prince, yes ThE PRINCE, made this 2 disc set one of the best things I've heard in years.
As I mentioned above this disc won't make much sense to those who don't know his work. Those who do should not make the mistake of missing out on one of the best college tour lectures I have ever witnessed. I just wish he woulda come to the colleges near me.
The Disc:
Not your typical disc as the extras are pretty much non-existent. However we can talk about the look of the film which is quite well done for what is obviously a low budgeted project.
The camera does a good job of capturing Kevin and the audience and the transfer comes through in many good ways. The sound equally is appeasing, especially for one of these circuit type events where the sound is sometimes difficult to discern. Columbia did a terrific job with the film and sound of this dvd.
bottom line:
You have to be a fan to appreciate this disc. If you are one, then boy are you in for a ride! Definitely worth the price of admission!
