The second season of what would become television's highest rated drama and show delved into sometimes dangerous areas. While the first season concerned itself solely with the slick aspects of crime solving, Season 2 gently delves beneath the slickly professional surface of the investigators themselves to get at what makes Grissom and his astonishingly gifted forensics team tick. Personal lives slowly are beginning to come into focus behind the puzzle filled storytelling.
Season 2 had alot of work for itself. It had to outdo the slickly designed plot twists and smartly disected secrets that made it a number one show. Some of the best episodes of Season 2 outdid those of the first season and that is simply amazing. Memorable episodes include 'Scuba Doobie Doo' which dealt with a scuba diver getting caught in a tree after a forest fire and Stalker which developed Nick's character even more. In all this season was another successully even one that totally hooked millions more.
Thankfully Paramount corrected the mistake CBS made with the first set by releasing Season 2 in beautiful Widescreen anamorphic at a ratio of 1.66:1.
With the show airing original broadcasts in stunning 1.78:1 HD one doesn't have to stretch too far to realize this is one smoking disc as far as presentation goes.
Equally improved is the soundtrack with a brand new Dolby Digital 5.1 transfer. While the first season's sounds were adequate, Season 2 benefits tremendously from the added depth of a truly digital surround sound. It's too bad the first season got left out when it came to the picture and sounds.
As far as extras go, Paramount includes its usual amount for a Television to DVD series. It begins with Commentaries on three episodes ("BURKED", "ALTER BOYS" and "ELLIE") all of which are interesting but I totally was hoping for Scuba Doobie Doo to have some comments, oh well!
There's also five exclusive featurettes that go behind the cameras. The five are each interesting in their own way and include, Makeup, Music & Special Effects; CSI-Shooting Locations; The CSI Tour; Tools of the Trade and The making of a hit. Paramount has totally beefed this set up and the retailers have dropped the price!
