Bandits
studio: MGM msrp: $26.99

The Movie:
Critically hailed as one of the year's best films, Bandits stars Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thornton as 2 light-hearted bank robbers, Joe Blake and Terry Collins. Joe is an irresistible suave ladies man, while Terry is a neurotic hypochondriac who can't stop worrying about every minute disease he may or may not have. The two unintentionally become famous for a string a bank robberies they perform by kidnapping the bank managers the night before the heist and then walking in the next morning without a fuss.

The Sleepover Bandits, as they are so eloquently labelled, become known to everyone they meet, as pretty much the nicest darned bank robbers you'll ever have the opportunity to meet. Of course, this often leads to some hilarious situations, and is only enhanced even moreso with the introduction of the supporting cast into the story. Kate Blanchett co-stars as the woman who gets between two best friends, as both Joe and Terry find themselves falling in love with the same woman. Naturally, this begins to cause tension, and emotions begin to fly high as it begins to effect their work. As the law enforcement slowly begins to close in on them, the Sleepover Bandits have to choose between love, money, and friendship. Bandits is written quite sharply, with witty banter, and amusing scenes being the norm. For a movie that was once set to be an all-out action flick, there's not much evidence left of that fact, but the movie, in my opinion, is stronger for it. Once again, the acting is the most impressive aspect of this movie, with Willis, Thornton and Blanchett all putting in stellar performances.

But perhaps most impressive of all, is the performance by young relative unknown Troy Garity. Garity plays the part of a young special effects stuntman, who drives the getaway car for the Bandits. He practically steals every scene he's in, and overall, he plays a rather integral part in the film. Both Willis and Thornton work incredibly well off of one another, and seem to be setting themselves up for a string of hit movies together. They obviously enjoy working together, and even go so far as to publicly state that they intend on working together on many more projects in the future. After watching Bandits... I'm very pleased to hear that.

The Disc:

Never one to settle for anything less, MGM Home Entertainment went out of their way and has provided this disc with not one, but two very impressive digital video transfers. A 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen version of the movie on one side, and a Standard 1.33:1 Fullscreen version on the other.

Both are extremely well done. The widescreen version restores the film’s original theatrical look and really shows off the wonderful cinematography of the movie. Utilizing some true ingenuity, they were able to craft a very unique look to the film with very innovative uses of colour.. Blacks are deep and solid, with no compression artifacts to note. It's truly a wonderful job, and stands as one of the disc's strongest points.

The disc also contains a rather surprisingly impressive 5.1 Dolby Digital mix in English, together with a Dolby surround track in various languages including French, Spanish and Portuguese. The audio as a whole is very well done and uses the surround channels to their fullest extent at times, whether it be for a subtle outdoor effects, or a full-on gunfight with bullets whizzing by. All in all, a job well done on all fronts, with nothing much to complain about.

bottom line:
A romantic comedy that for once men will enjoy just as much as the women.
